M.D. Valsamma's school life in Kerala sparked her athletic journey, noticed by a PE teacher for her tall frame, leading her to hurdles and pentathlon while studying at Sports Division Kannur.

Born in 1960 and hailing from Ottathai, Kerala’s Kannur district, Manathoor Devasai Valsamma, known as MD Valsamma orn in Ottathai, Kannur, Valsamma showed early promise in athletics during her school days.

A physical education teacher recognized her talent in high jump and quick reflexes, encouraging her to try the 100m hurdles.

Her family was conservative, and persuading her father to let her compete was a hurdle itself, but sport opened doors for her.

She faced societal norms where girls were expected to marry young, but her success challenged these views.
